Festival Season 2026: Inside Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits
Two of America's biggest festivals mix pop, K-pop, rock and dance music on the same bill this year — here's how Lollapalooza and ACL's 2026 lineups stack up.
American festival lineups used to sort themselves by genre — a rock stage, a dance tent, maybe a pop headliner if the booker felt bold. This year's two biggest fall-adjacent festivals do the opposite on purpose, stacking pop, K-pop, rock and electronic acts into the same headline slots and daring fans to cross over.
Lollapalooza: A 10-Year Contract and a Genre-Blind Bill
Lollapalooza returns to Grant Park in Chicago for four days, July 30 to August 2, under a newly signed 10-year city contract extension — a sign organizers are betting on the format for the long haul. More than 150 acts play across seven stages, but it's the headliner pairings that tell the real story: Lorde and John Summit share Thursday, Charli xcx and The Smashing Pumpkins share Friday, Olivia Dean and Jennie of Blackpink share Saturday, and Tate McRae and The xx close out Sunday. Each night pairs a pop or K-pop act against a rock or dance act, rather than segregating genres by stage. Further down the bill, Turnstile, Clipse, YOASOBI and Yungblud add hardcore, hip-hop, J-pop and alt-rock into the same four days.Austin City Limits: A 25th Anniversary, Doubled
Nine weeks later, Austin City Limits marks its 25th anniversary the way only ACL can — by running the same lineup across two separate weekends, October 2-4 and October 9-11, at Zilker Park. That format means twice the audience gets the same headliners: Charli XCX, Rufus Du Sol, Twenty One Pilots, Lorde and The XX top the bill overall, with Skrillex closing out Weekend 1 and Kings of Leon closing Weekend 2. The undercard leans similarly cross-genre, with Turnstile, Labrinth, The Chainsmokers, Young Miko and Bleachers rounding out the days.
The Common Thread
Between the two festivals, a handful of names show up as connective tissue for the whole season. Lorde headlines a night at each. Charli xcx headlines both as well — and if a Lollapalooza or ACL set isn't enough, she's also running her own headlining arena tour this fall, opening with a stop in Philadelphia on September 11 in support of her new album. Turnstile appears on both bills too, further evidence that hardcore and pop are sharing festival real estate more comfortably than they used to.
